Where to Eat During Web Summit Lisbon: Skip the Queues, Eat Well

Every November, 70,000+ people descend on Lisbon for Web Summit. The Altice Arena turns into a sea of lanyards and pitch decks. And every restaurant within a 5km radius gets slammed.

If you're attending Web Summit and want to eat somewhere decent, you've got two choices: book now, or resign yourself to food court sandwiches and 90-minute waits.

Here's the play-by-play for eating well during Web Summit week without wasting half your evening standing in line.

The Problem with Parque das Nações (Where Web Summit Happens)

Altice Arena sits in Parque das Nações - Lisbon's modern waterfront district. It's convenient for the conference. It's terrible for food.

You've got Vasco da Gama shopping centre (chain restaurants, food court), a handful of tourist traps along the waterfront, and not much else. During Web Summit week, all of them are packed. The queues start at 19:00 and don't let up.

If you're serious about eating properly, get out of Parque das Nações.

Where the Smart Money Goes: Santos, Cais do Sodré & Estrela

Ten minutes by Uber from Altice Arena, you hit Santos and Cais do Sodré - two neighbourhoods where actual Lisboetas eat. Less tourist traffic, better restaurants, reservations you can actually get if you book ahead.

Downunder sits right in the middle of Santos, on Rua dos Industriais - a quiet street lined with restaurants that don't rely on conference foot traffic to survive. We're open Mon-Sat from 19:00. Closed Sunday (when most Web Summit attendees are either flying home or nursing hangovers).

Book for 19:00 or 19:30 if you're planning to head back for evening events. Book for 21:00+ if you're done for the day and want a proper sit-down meal without rushing.

What You'll Eat at Downunder During Web Summit

We do Australian-Asian fusion via tasting menus only. Two options:

• ▸5 courses - €70 (wine pairing +€45) - Prawn, ceviche, fresh corvina, 36-hour pork belly, chocolate tart
• ▸7 courses - €85 (wine pairing +€55) - Everything above plus salt & pepper squid and kangaroo tartar with truffled caviar

Both menus take 90-120 minutes. Factor that in if you're trying to make it back for a 22:00 after-party.

Booking Strategy for Web Summit Week

Web Summit runs Tuesday through Friday, with unofficial side events Monday and Saturday. Every restaurant in central Lisbon knows this. Here's how to avoid getting shut out:

• ▸Book 2-3 weeks out minimum - preferably as soon as you book your Web Summit ticket
• ▸Avoid Thursday night - busiest conference night, hardest to get reservations
• ▸Tuesday/Wednesday are easier - many attendees haven't arrived yet or are still settling in
• ▸Early (19:00) or late (21:30+) slots are your best bet for walk-ins, but don't count on it

If you're bringing clients or co-founders, book for 6-8 people and you'll have more options than trying to squeeze in a table for two at the last minute.

Getting to Santos from Web Summit (Logistics)

From Altice Arena to Downunder:

• ▸Uber/Bolt: 10 minutes, €8-12 depending on surge pricing (expect surge during peak Web Summit hours)
• ▸Metro: Red line Oriente → Alameda, then Green line to Cais do Sodré, 5-minute walk to Rua dos Industriais (total 20-25 min)
• ▸Walk from hotel: If you're staying in Baixa/Chiado/Bairro Alto, Santos is 10-15 min on foot

Address: Rua dos Industriais 21, 1200-685 Lisboa. Look for the charcoal exterior with gold signage. We're between a small wine bar and a closed shopfront - easy to miss if you're walking fast.

What About Client Dinners & Group Bookings?

If you're hosting investors, closing deals, or entertaining clients during Web Summit, you need:

• ▸Somewhere quiet enough to actually talk business (not a packed brasserie with tables 10cm apart)
• ▸Food that impresses without being fussy or pretentious
• ▸A place that can handle dietary restrictions without making a scene about it

Downunder seats 30-35. We've hosted Australian Embassy dinners, startup founder celebrations, and investor pitch dinners. The room is small enough to feel intimate but not so cramped that you're eavesdropping on the next table's funding round.
