Most fine dining restaurants in Lisbon don't open for lunch on Tuesdays. That includes Downunder by Justin Jennings. We serve dinner Tuesday through Saturday, and lunch on Saturday only.

This isn't laziness. It's logistics. Running a proper lunch service alongside dinner prep requires double the kitchen staff, double the mise en place, and compromises the quality of evening service. Most chef-driven restaurants in Portugal choose to focus their energy where it counts.

Why Tuesday Lunch is Difficult in Lisbon

The reality of restaurant economics: weekday lunch in Lisbon doesn't draw the crowds that justify opening a fine dining kitchen twice a day. Business lunches exist, but they're shrinking. Remote work killed most of that traffic.

What you'll find open on Tuesday lunch:

• ▸Seafood restaurants near Cais do Sodré and Mercado da Ribeira
• ▸Neighbourhood cafés and luncheonettes
• ▸Hotel restaurants (always open, rarely memorable)

If you're after chef-driven food, tasting menus, or a proper wine list, you're better off booking Saturday lunch or coming back Tuesday evening.

The Better Move: Saturday Lunch at Downunder

We open for lunch one day a week: Saturday, 12:00-14:30. Same kitchen, same tasting menu, same wine list as dinner service. The only difference is natural light.

Why Saturday works:

• ▸You get the full experience without rushing to make it back to work

If You Must Eat on Tuesday 9 September

Book dinner instead. Downunder is open Tuesday night from 19:00-23:00. Same menu options, same quality, better atmosphere once the sun goes down and the candles come out.

Alternatively, explore the Santos and Estrela neighbourhoods for Tuesday lunch. You won't find tasting menus, but you'll find good Portuguese cooking at neighbourhood spots that have been feeding locals for decades.

What Makes Saturday Lunch Different

Saturday lunch at Downunder runs 2-2.5 hours for the full tasting menu. It's not rushed. You're not squeezing it into a work break. It's an actual meal, with wine, with conversation, with time to enjoy each course properly.

The tasting menu format works better at lunch than à la carte. You don't have to make decisions. The kitchen sends out the best of what they're cooking that day, course by course, paced properly. You just show up hungry.
