Saturday lunch is the most underrated meal of the week in Lisbon. Everyone fights for dinner reservations, queues for brunch, and completely overlooks the two-and-a-half hours between noon and half past two that could be the best Saturday lunch you have all month.
I get it. Dinner feels like the main event. But after twenty years in kitchens across two continents, I can tell you this: Saturday lunch is when chefs are sharpest, kitchens are calmest, and the food hits different. Natural light. No rush. The same menu as dinner, minus the crowd.
Why Saturday Lunch Beats Dinner in Lisbon
There is a rhythm to restaurant kitchens that most diners never see. Friday and Saturday nights are war. The kitchen is running at full tilt, tickets stacking up, every section under pressure. The food is still excellent - it has to be - but the energy is frantic.
Saturday lunch is the opposite. Fewer covers. More attention per table. The same chef cooking the same dishes, but with space to breathe. At Downunder by Justin Jennings, I am personally in the kitchen for every Saturday lunch service. It is a smaller, more intimate experience than the evening.
Then there is the practical side:
- ▸Easier to book - Saturday dinner fills up a week out; lunch is often available 2-3 days ahead
- ▸Natural light - Lisbon sunlight flooding the room changes the atmosphere completely
- ▸More relaxed pace - no pressure to turn tables, you can linger over wine
- ▸You still have the evening - a long lunch leaves your Saturday night free
- ▸Wine hits differently at noon - a glass of Douro white with sunlight on the table is genuinely life-affirming
What to Look for in a Saturday Lunch Spot
Not every restaurant that opens for lunch deserves your Saturday. Most places throw open the doors at noon because they have to, not because they have designed a lunch experience worth having.
The best Saturday lunch in Lisbon comes from restaurants that treat it as a proper service, not an afterthought. What separates the good from the forgettable:
- ▸Full menu available - not a stripped-down lunch card with three options
- ▸The head chef is actually there - not delegated to a sous chef running a skeleton crew
- ▸Wine service is proper - sommelier on hand, not just a list and a corkscrew
- ▸No time pressure - if they are hovering with the bill at 14:00, find somewhere else
Saturday Lunch at Downunder: What You Get
We open for lunch on Saturdays only - 12:00 to 14:30. It is deliberate. One lunch service per week means we treat it as something special, not routine.
The full tasting menu is available. Same courses as Saturday night. Same wines. Same kitchen team. The only difference is the atmosphere - quieter, brighter, and somehow more personal.
5 Courses - EUR70
Wine pairing +EUR45
Perfect for a long Saturday lunch without feeling overwhelmed. About 90 minutes.
7 Courses - EUR85
Wine pairing +EUR55
The full experience. Two hours of Australian-Asian fusion with matched wines. The way Saturday should feel.
The dishes rotate with the seasons, but the approach stays the same: Australian techniques, Asian flavour profiles, Portuguese and international wines. Kangaroo, barramundi, yuzu, miso, native Australian peppers - things you will not find on any other Saturday lunch menu in Lisbon.

Reserve Saturday Lunch →The Santos Neighbourhood on a Saturday
Location matters for a Saturday lunch. You want somewhere you can walk to and from without battling traffic or hunting for parking. Santos, where Downunder sits on Rua dos Industriais, is one of those Lisbon neighbourhoods that rewards a slow afternoon.
After lunch, you are two minutes from the river. Ten minutes on foot from LX Factory if you want to browse. Or you do what most of our Saturday lunch guests do - walk out into the sunshine, find a bench, and sit with the satisfaction of a meal that was worth your time.
Santos is also one of the quieter central neighbourhoods on weekends. None of the tourist chaos of Baixa or Alfama. Just locals, a few good cafes, and the kind of calm that makes a Saturday lunch feel like the civilised ritual it should be.
Who Saturday Lunch Is Really For
In my experience, the people who book Saturday lunch tend to be a specific type. They are not in a hurry. They appreciate good food without needing it to be a production. They would rather eat well at noon than queue for dinner at nine.
Saturday lunch works particularly well for:
- ▸Couples who want quality time - lunch is more conversational than dinner, less performative
- ▸Visitors with evening plans - catch fado, a show, or just an early night after a proper meal
- ▸Food lovers who want to actually taste - your palate is freshest earlier in the day
- ▸Small celebrations - birthdays, anniversaries, promotions that deserve more than brunch
How to Book and What to Know
Saturday lunch at Downunder runs from 12:00 to 14:30. We are in Santos, at Rua dos Industriais 21. The nearest metro is Santos (green line) or a short walk from Cais do Sodre.
Book ahead. We have limited covers for lunch and Saturday is our only lunch service of the week, so it fills up faster than you might expect - especially from May through October when Lisbon is heaving with visitors.
Dress however you are comfortable. This is not the kind of place that requires a jacket. Come as you are - the food does not care what you are wearing.
The best Saturday lunch in Lisbon is the one where you lose track of time. Where the food is interesting enough to talk about between courses, the wine is good enough that one glass becomes three, and you walk out thinking: that is what a Saturday should feel like.
