Let me be honest - Lapa itself isn't really a restaurant district. It's one of Lisbon's most elegant neighbourhoods, home to embassies, grand mansions, and quiet tree-lined streets. Beautiful for walking, less so for eating.

But that doesn't mean you're stuck. The neighbouring Santos and Estrela areas - both a 5-10 minute walk from Lapa - have a much stronger food scene. That's where locals, embassy staff, and anyone who actually knows Lisbon goes to eat.

Why Lapa Has Few Restaurants

Lapa is residential first, diplomatic second. The National Assembly sits here. Foreign embassies line the streets. It's quiet, prestigious, and deliberately low-key. That's the appeal.

There are a handful of spots - a café here, a traditional Portuguese place there - but nothing that would make you plan your evening around it. For dinner, you walk to Santos or Estrela.

Santos and Estrela: Lapa's Dining Neighbours

Santos sits just below Lapa toward the river. Estrela is to the east. Both are easy walking distance (10 minutes max) and have far more interesting dining options.

Santos in particular has become one of Lisbon's best under-the-radar food neighbourhoods. Fewer tourists than Chiado or Bairro Alto, more locals, better value. You'll find everything from traditional Portuguese seafood to modern fusion.

That's where we are - Downunder by Justin Jennings, on Rua dos Industriais 21 in Santos. About 800 metres (10 minute walk) from central Lapa.

What to Expect at Downunder

Australian-Asian fusion. Not the kind you find everywhere - the kind that actually works because the chef (me, Justin Jennings) spent 20+ years figuring out which flavours belong together.

We run two tasting menus: 5 courses (€70) and 7 courses (€85). Wine pairings available. Every dish changes with the season, but the standard stays the same - MICHELIN Guide Selected three years running, 4.8 stars on TripAdvisor with 717+ reviews.

Embassy staff from Lapa come here regularly. Diplomats, expats, locals who've travelled enough to know what good food actually tastes like. That's the clientele. If you're staying in or near Lapa and want a proper dinner, this is your spot.

Other Options Near Lapa

If you want variety, here's what else is within walking distance from Lapa:

How to Get from Lapa to Santos

Walk. Seriously - it's 10 minutes downhill. From the centre of Lapa (around Jardim das Necessidades or Assembleia da República), head north-west toward Santos. Rua de São Domingos connects the two neighbourhoods directly.

Downunder is on Rua dos Industriais 21, just off Santos. You can also take tram 28 if you're feeling lazy, but walking is faster and nicer.

Uber/Bolt from anywhere in Lapa costs €3-5 max. But again - just walk. It's Lisbon. Walking is part of the experience.

Booking Tips

Lapa might not have restaurants on every corner, but that's not really a problem when Santos and Estrela are a 10-minute walk away. Better food, better atmosphere, and still close enough that you're back in Lapa before your legs know the difference.
